The internet wants this to be a fight. It isn't. Whey and plant proteins are two ways to get grams into your day, each with real trade-offs you can read straight off a label. This guide lays them out flat — no team jerseys — so you can pick on facts instead of forum energy, which matters more when appetite is low and every gram has to count.
What "complete" actually means
Protein is built from amino acids, nine of which are "essential" (your body can't make them). A complete protein has all nine in useful amounts.
- Whey (from milk) is complete and notably high in leucine, the amino acid most associated with the muscle-protein-synthesis signal. That's a formulation fact, not a promise about your body.
- Single-plant proteins are often lower in one or two essentials — rice runs a bit low in lysine, pea in methionine. The fix is old news: blend them. A pea-and-rice blend covers each other's gaps and lands close to complete.
This is why serious plant products are blends. Huel Black Edition, for instance, uses a pea-and-rice base (40 g protein per 90 g serving) precisely so the amino profile fills in. Digestibility, in plain terms
You don't absorb 100% of what a label lists; digestibility varies by source. Whey scores very high on the common scales. Well-formulated plant blends score a little lower, which is why plant products often list a slightly higher protein dose per serving — they're building in a margin. You don't need the exact percentages; you need to know that 20 g of whey and 20 g of a plant blend aren't perfectly identical, and the label already nudges for it.
The lactose question
Here's where it gets practical:
- Whey isolate is filtered to very low lactose — often near zero. Transparent Labs and Legion are both isolates, so they tend to sit fine even for the mildly lactose-sensitive. (Whey concentrate keeps more lactose; that's a big part of the isolate vs concentrate story.)
- Plant proteins are lactose-free by definition. If dairy simply doesn't agree with you, that's a clean reason to go plant — no further justification needed.
Reading the two labels side by side

Two honest notes on that table. Texture is a consensus observation, not a lab test — plant proteins are broadly reported as thicker and grittier, whey isolates as thinner and cleaner-mixing; your mileage varies. And sweetener is a preference line, not a quality line.
Cost: usually close, sometimes not
Per 20 g of protein, a whey isolate like Transparent Labs runs about $1.43 and Legion about $1.82 at the prices we verified. Plant meal powders can look cheaper per 20 g (Huel is around $1.77 one-time, less on subscription) but remember you're buying a whole meal's calories, carbs, and micros — not just protein. Two cousins people confuse
Before you decide, clear up two proteins that get lumped in and shouldn't.
Casein is the other milk protein — the roughly 80% of milk that isn't whey. It digests slowly and gels when mixed, which some people like before a long gap between meals. On a label it looks like whey's macros but thicker; it's still complete and still dairy, so the lactose caveats are milder than concentrate but present. If a "blend" lists whey and casein, that's normal, not a red flag.
Collagen is the one to watch. It's shelved near the protein powders and lists grams of protein, but collagen is not a complete protein — it's missing tryptophan and low in several essentials. Gram-for-gram it can't stand in for whey or a plant blend as your daily protein source. Soy deserves a mention too: it's one of the few single plant proteins that's essentially complete on its own, which is why it shows up in older blends. Some shoppers skip it on taste or preference; nothing on the label makes it lesser. Read it like any other source — grams per serving, sweetener, third-party status.
The practical rule: for hitting a daily protein target, reach for a complete source — whey, casein, or a properly blended plant powder — and treat collagen as a supplement to it, not a substitute.
So which should you buy?
Pick whey isolate if: you tolerate dairy, you want the highest leucine per gram and the thinnest mix, and you like paying only for protein.
Pick a plant blend if: dairy doesn't agree with you, you prefer a plant-based diet, or you want a fuller-bodied shake. Just confirm it's a blend (or a fortified single source), not a lone pea or rice protein.
For most people on a small appetite, the deciding factor isn't whey-versus-plant at all — it's which one you'll actually drink every day. The best protein is the one that gets finished.
