Electrolyte mixes are having a moment, and the marketing has gotten loud. Underneath it is a simple label question: what are you actually buying per serving, and does plain water already cover it? This guide reads the electrolyte label the way we read a protein panel — by the milligram — so you can tell a functional formula from a flavored one.

What electrolytes are

Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge in solution. The four that show up on drink labels:

  • Sodium — the big one; the mineral you lose most in sweat.
  • Potassium — works alongside sodium; common in food, often modest in mixes.
  • Magnesium — smaller amounts, included in fuller formulas.
  • Chloride — usually tags along with sodium.

On a label these appear in milligrams, and the milligrams are the whole story. A mix that lists "electrolytes" on the front but 50 mg of sodium on the back is a flavor packet with a rounding error of minerals.

The number that separates the categories

Sodium content is what actually distinguishes electrolyte products. Compare the two ends:

The sugar question

This is where labels earn their keep. Sugar in an electrolyte drink is either:

  1. Functional — in an ORS-style formula, a specific amount of glucose helps the gut co-transport sodium and water. That's the DripDrop logic, and the ~7 g is doing a job.
  2. Just flavor — in many mainstream mixes, the sugar (sometimes 11 g or more) is there for taste, not function.

When a mix beats plain water

Most of the time, on a normal day, water and a balanced diet handle hydration fine. A dedicated electrolyte mix starts to make sense in specific situations: heavy or prolonged sweating, hot-weather activity, or days when you're simply not eating much and therefore not getting the sodium and potassium food normally provides. That last case is worth naming plainly — when appetite is low, total food intake drops, and the minerals that ride along with food drop with it as a matter of arithmetic.

But "when you're sweating a lot" is not the same as "constantly," and sodium is genuinely individual. How much sodium is right for you depends on your activity, climate, and health history — and it's a real medical variable if you manage blood pressure, kidney, or heart concerns. Read left to right and the trade-offs jump out. The zero-sugar formula hands you sodium and nothing else. The ORS formula uses sugar on purpose. The flavor-forward option is closer to a lightly fortified soft drink. All three are legitimate for something; the label just tells you for what.

The mistake is buying on the front of the box, where all three say "hydration" and "electrolytes" in the same friendly font. Flip to the panel, read the two numbers that matter — sodium and sugar — and the decision usually makes itself.

Do you even need one?

Be honest about your day. Desk job, mild weather, eating normally? Water is probably doing the job, and an electrolyte mix is a small luxury. Long hot workouts, or stretches where you're barely eating and the sodium food usually supplies has dropped off? That's when a real formula earns its cost. Match the product to the situation, not to the ad — and, because sodium is medically individual, keep your clinician in that conversation.

A quick label checklist

Next time you're comparing two boxes:

  1. Sodium (mg per serving). The headline number. Higher isn't automatically better — it's the number to match to your actual need.
  2. Total sugars (g). Functional (ORS-style) or just flavor?
  3. Potassium and magnesium (mg). Present in meaningful amounts, or trace?
  4. Cost per serving. Price ÷ servings. LMNT's $1.50 a stick buys 1000 mg sodium and no sugar; a cheaper stick may carry less sodium or more sugar. That trade is the real comparison.
  5. Disclosure. Does the label give you real milligrams, or vague "electrolyte blend" language?
